                                                                            Our Time Line

 
1916:  plans for a lightweight self-loading rifle were created by Vladimir Grigorevich Federov one of the Czar's arms designers.  During this time many armies of the world were working on self-loading lightweight rifle projects following the introduction of the automatic pistol and machinegun.

1940: first developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov
in October, 1941: in a battle in Bryansk Mikhail Kalashnikov was wounded

1944: Design work on the AK began.

1947: AK-47 was adopted. Base model for all AK's entered service. This submachine gun has been manufactured up to 1959. In many countries it is being remade to look different ways.
1949: The AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces.

1959: The AK was upgraded with less recoil and better grip and more power. At the same time they developed a new gun similar to the AK-47 called the "RPK-47".   

1961: Most of Kalashnikov's machine guns were adopted in Army.

1974: the complex of submachine guns and light machine guns for such type of cartridge was developed and adopted in armament.

1990 the Army was equipped with the modernized Kalashnikov submachine gun AK-74M, having folding plastic but with the accessory placed in it and a plate for mounting optical and night sights.

1991 the same modernization was carried out with a light machine gun. And so the modernized Kalashnikov light machine guns RPK-74M (5.45 mm) was adopted in armament. It replaced four modifications of light machine guns.
